The Anchor

Everything I build in business exists in the context of something larger.

I am a husband. I am a father of nine children — including children we adopted from difficult circumstances. Our home is loud, full, and exactly what I would choose if I had to choose it again.

People sometimes ask how I balance a serious business life with a large family. My honest answer is that I don’t think of it as balance. The family is not the counterweight to the work. It is the reason for it.

My wife is the most capable person I know. She holds more together before 9 a.m. than most people manage in a week. Our children are being raised to know what real work looks like, what faith looks like when it costs something, and what it means to care for people who need caring for.

We live simply in some ways and richly in others. We are not interested in performing a lifestyle. We are interested in building one worth living.

I share this not to make a point about family size or lifestyle. I share it because I think it matters who a person is when the cameras aren’t rolling — and this is who I am.
